Six days by 4x4 through the Tadrart and the Tassili n'Ajjer
The northern Tassili n'Ajjer by 4x4, where dark volcanic rock lies over pale sandstone carved by a sea that dried up thousands of years ago. Deluxe desert camps, full board, and some of the oldest rock art on earth.
We meet after 19:30 at the domestic terminal of Houari Boumediene airport in Algiers, once you have checked in. The flight leaves at 22:15 and lands in Djanet around 01:00.
Bags, then the drive out to camp, arriving about 03:00.
A late start around 09:00. Breakfast, then a walk to the rock paintings close by. Buffet lunch, then a rest through the heat.
At about 16:00 we drive out to Erg Admer, the sea of dunes, for sunset.
Out for the whole day to the Dider slab at Tin Teghirine, 200 km each way — a large panel of engravings from when this was grassland. Back at camp around 16:30.
A half day at camp to rest. In the afternoon, the rock paintings of the Tikoubaouine valley, as far as the elephant rock arch and the tumulus. Dinner, then a Tuareg music evening.
An early start with a packed lunch, out to Essendilene by way of a nomad camp. 45 minutes on foot to the guelta — a UNESCO reserve — and 45 minutes back.
To Djanet for the Weeping Cow, an engraving roughly seven thousand years old. Craft market, a last sunset and tea ceremony. Transfer at 23:00 for the 02:25 flight, landing in Algiers around 05:55 Friday.
